Horse Riding in Ireland generally is in the English style, with a few exceptions, but we are aware that visitors from the US in particular may only be familiar with the western style of riding. The saddles are quite different of course in size and shape and where the western saddle is built more for comfort the english saddle requires the rider to make more use of leg muscles. The English saddles are divided into 2 types, the jumping saddle and the dressage saddle – most serious riders would have one of each type – the dressage saddle has a wider & deeper flap at the knee & is deeper in the seat, while the jumping saddle has a more shaped flap to allow for more grip with the knees and not so deep in the seat. Most riding centers that offer riding holidays in Ireland use a regular jumping saddle which in general are very comfortable and easy to ride in – if you have never ridden in one there is no need to feel worried about it you will quickly adjust, and find yourself quite at home.
